Remembering the kidnapped Chibok girls

Ten years ago, on the night of 14-15 April 2014, 276 mostly Christian female students aged from 16 to 18 were kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram from the Government Girls Secondary School at the town of Chibok in Borno State, in Nigeria. Wikipedia

Ultimately, some of the girls escaped but about 100 girls are still missing. Imagine if one of the girls was your daughter!!! You would surely have gone mad with grief and worry. One can thus legitimately ask why the Nigerian army did not move heaven and earth to get the girls home?

And the question reminds me about the discussions I would have with my father, Mike Hoare, back in the day about such wickedness. He would usually propose a 'strike force' to go into such situations quickly and aggressively, and get the job done, and he always put himself forward as the leader of the force. And I would remember how right the British Army were in World War 2 when they described Mike as 'a forceful and aggressive type' who would go far.

In 1967, he drew up a plan for General Mobutu in the Congo; he proposed a highly mobile force that would go in and deal with security flare-ups, in that way keeping the country stable, attracting investment, and facilitating a return to normal life. And then, some years ago, when the Somali pirates were disrupting shipping off the African coast, he proposed such a strike force to deal with the pirates. And again, in 2014 he said if he had been 50 years younger he would have gone after Boko Haram with a small force and he would have returned the girls to their families.
