Wild Geese film now on Prime Video
Nearly every month an email arrives with an enquiry about the sale of a book or books, and soon it transpires that the writer, now a Mike Hoare fan, was taken as a boy to see that famous film, The Wild Geese, featuring Richard Burton as the Mike Hoare character. And that's the truth.
And the writer soon shares that it was that film, shot in South Africa in 1977, that changed his life, and that persuaded him to join the military. Wow.
And now we learn that the film has been re-released as a Blu-Ray version AND it is now viewable on Prime Video.
The action scenes were shot in South Africa, and none other than Mike Hoare was the military advisor to the film. Mike always said it had been a privilege for him to meet Richard Burton on set. You will never guess why. Because Burton was a famous Shakespearean actor and Mike was a huge Shakespeare fan.
The film also features Roger Moore who was playing James Bond roles at that time, and Richard Harris, and many other names you will recognise. As two of the lead actors were named Richard, the story goes they were known on set as Richard One and Richard Two.
The blurb tells us that "a team of aging mercenary soldiers is hired by a wealthy industrialist for one final mission: recruit and train a squad of commandos, parachute into an unstable African nation, snatch its deposed president from a maximum security prison, escape via the military-controlled airport, and massacre anyone who gets in their way. Getting to the target will be murder, but getting out alive may be impossible."
