Mike Hoare and his 'Wild Geese' rescued about 2000 missionaries from barbarity in the Congo, but for some they were too late …
'Mad Mike' Hoare and 300 'Wild Geese' were employed to crush a communist rebellion in the Congo in the mid-1960s. Their progress quickly became world news, especially as the rebels were daily committing acts of terror and barbarity against both local civilians and expat missionaries.
The first phase came to a climax when, on 24 November 1964, the city of Stanleyville fell to Belgian paratroopers and Mike's 5 Commando. But much of the city was still in rebel hands, and on the first day there were still two American families trapped in the suburbs.
Mike personally led the raid to get the families out, and describes the derring-do graphically in his book 'Congo Mercenary'. See Mike Hoare himself reading about that in the video titled: Mike Hoare and his 'Wild Geese' rescued about 2000 missionaries from barbarity in the Congo, but for some they were too late …
Mike and the Wild Geese went on to crush the rebels in two more campaigns, and one might ask: Who paid for the mercenaries to do their work. And why? What was so important about the Congo that it had to remain within the ambit of the West.
